Partha Basu

Dr. Partha Basu is Head of the Early Detection, Prevention and Infections Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), World Health Organization (WHO), France. He graduated in Medicine in 1988, completed an MD in Gynecology, followed by post-doctoral training in Gynecological Oncology and a PhD in Clinical Oncology.Before joining IARC in 2015, Dr. Basu served as Head of the Department of Gynecological Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, India. He is internationally recognized for research that has shaped several WHO guidelines and global recommendations. Through the CanScreen5 project, Dr. Basu has played a pivotal role in building global capacity for quality-assured cancer early detection services across diverse healthcare systems.He has authored 320 peer-reviewed publications, cited more than 12,000 times, and continues to be a leading voice in advancing cancer prevention and early detection worldwide. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Honorary Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (UK) in 2023 and Visiting Professorship at Zhejiang Cancer Hospital (affiliated to Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences), Hangzhou, China.
Susie Black

Susie Black is the Senior Complaints & Feedback Manager for the National Screening Service (NSS). She leads on the delivery of personal cervical screening reviews on behalf of CervicalCheck and oversees organisational compliance with national policy for service user feedback in the NSS. Susie represents the NSS on the National Complaints Governance and Learning Forum and contributes to ongoing national policy revisions. She holds an MPhil in Irish Writing, an honours degree in English Literature and Philosophy, and a QQI Level VII in Patient Safety and Complaints Advocacy. She is dedicated to representing service users’ voices, ensuring their rights are upheld, and facilitating improvements through their feedback.
Sarah Bowden

Dr Sarah Bowden is an NIHR funded Academic Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London and is training as a surgical subspecialist in Gynaecological Oncology at Hammersmith Hospital. After completing her medical degree from Cardiff University she took an ACF post in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and was awarded an Imperial Health Charity pre-doctoral fellowship and Genesis Trust grant to work on HPV epigenetic signatures in cervical cancer. Under a Wellcome Trust 4i Clinical Scientist fellowship she completed her PhD in 2022 at Imperial College, exploring genetic and epigenetic signatures for early detection of cervical cancer in the Kyrgiou Lab. As an ACL she is currently co-supervising MSc and PhD students in follow-on work on from her doctorate, particularly in the translational applications of OMICS technologies for the early detection and personalised management of women with cervical and endometrial cancers. Her interest is in enhancing screening for gynaecological cancers with novel molecular approaches, as well as fertility-sparing approaches. Sarah also sits on the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) O&G section council and the BSCCP scientific committee.

Current chair of the Tallaght University Hospital ANP group.Started as a clinical midwife specialist in colposcopy in the Coombe Women’s Hospital in 2005 and moved to Tallaght as a candidate ANP in 2017.
Rachael Comer

Rachael Comer is Education and Training Manager with the Screening Training Unit (STU), National Screening Service (NSS), Ireland. She leads the strategic development, governance and quality assurance of the national Cervical Screening Education Programme, supporting healthcare professionals across primary care, ambulatory gynaecology, colposcopy and specialist services. Rachael has a clinical background in colposcopy, gynaecology and women’s health, having previously worked as a Clinical Nurse Manager in colposcopy. She has also held roles in nurse and midwifery education and in Nurse prescribing leadership. Her work focuses on strengthening quality assurance within cervical screening through education, workforce development and service integration. She has led national initiatives to expand access to cervical screening education, develop clinical guidance resources, and support opportunistic screening pathways for underserved and vulnerable populations. Rachael has presented nationally and internationally on cervical screening quality improvement, education strategy and service development, with particular interests in equitable access, trauma-informed care and embedding screening within non-traditional cervical screening settings.

Dr Niamh Conlon is a consultant histopathologist in the Department of Pathology at Cork University Hospital, where she is the Cervical Check pathology lead. Dr Conlon completed her higher specialist training in histopathology in Dublin, followed by fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Emma Davidson

Professor Davidson is an NIHR Research Professor and Honorary Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on screening, prevention and early detection of gynaecological cancers. In her ACES suite of studies, she developed urine self-sampling for cervical screening, demonstrating its accuracy (92% relative sensitivity for cervical pre-cancer (CIN2+) detection), acceptability (75% happy to screen with urine), potential to improve uptake (14% of previous non-attenders returned a urine sample), reduce health inequities (e.g. in the LGBTQ+ community) and provide a cheaper (no screening appointments) and greener alternative (7x less carbon intensive) to routine cervical screening. She will present these data at the conference and discuss the opportunities and challenges of introducing urine self-sampling for cervical screening in the UK and beyond.

He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and holds an MD in cancer survivorship, specifically managing menopause after cancer, from University College Dublin.
Linda Eckert

Dr. Eckert is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington who also completed an Infectious Disease Fellowship in the Department of Medicine. As a provider of patient care for over thirty years, her practice has been primarily based in Seattle, Washington, but she also has worked as a physician above and below the equator and across oceans. As a researcher, Dr. Eckert has over 100 peer review publications with research focusing on infections in the genital tract and the impact of immunizations in reproductive health. She has served as a long-term consultant to the World Health Organization in cervical cancer prevention, and also worked extensively with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and with the CDC on vaccine policy. An internationally recognized expert in immunizations and cervical cancer prevention, Dr. Eckert is frequently in the spotlight for her expertise in HPV vaccinations and cervical cancer screening. Most recently, she was able to travel to Pakistan to collaborate with their ministry of health as they rolled out HPV vaccine for their girls.Dr. Eckert’s first book, “Enough: Because We Can Stop Cervical Cancer”, was published in January of 2024 by Cambridge University Press. The book delivers an impassioned plea for the elimination of cervical cancer, weaving powerful stories with evidence-based information. Enough features women from six continents who have battled cervical cancer and want their stories to move others to action. Written for a general audience, Eckert provides a compelling exploration of the cultural, political, and economic barriers to women’s healthcare and the interlocking systems of oppression that continue to allow the devastation of a preventable cancer.
Sarah Fitzgibbon

Dr Sarah Fitzgibbon is a GP from Cork in the Republic of Ireland. She qualified from UCC in 2000 and attained membership of the Irish College of General Practitioners in 2006. She became a GP Partner in 2009 and worked on the northside of Cork city for 15 years. In 2014, at the age of 37, she was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. She began to write a blog, “Adventures of a Sick Doctor” and she now writes regularly for the Medical Independent. She was awarded the Dr Aidan Meade medal for her essay, ‘Dying and Living’, in 2021. In December 2017, she set up the Women in Medicine in Ireland Network (WiMIN) and organised its first conference in Dublin in September 2018. She is a member of the Deep End Ireland group, which advocates for improved primary care services for people living in areas of deprivation. Since 2021, she has been the Primary Care Clinical Advisor with CervicalCheck, the national cervical screening programme in Ireland. Since 2025, she has also become involved in the other three screening programmes within the National Screening Service. She is a member of the Patient Liaison Group of the Association of Coloproctologists of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI). She is passionate about the delivery of kind, effective and efficient healthcare for all people in Ireland, particularly those who are marginalised.
Grainne Flannelly

Professor Grainne Flannelly Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and lead colposcopist and trainer at the National Maternity Hospital and St Vincent’s University Hospital in Dublin. For 25 years – currently retired. An advocate for cervical cancer prevention programmes, she was the clinical director with the CervicalCheck programme from 2010 to 2018. Currently a member of the EUCanScreen group delivering training the trainer and quality in colposcopy courses. As a clinical Professor with the School of Medicine in UCD runs an annual basic colposcopy course in Dublin. Combines a keen interest in training in colposcopy with the delivery of digital learning materials and online training. As chair of the BSCCP IT she oversees the content of the BSCCP Website and integrated Learning management platform for the BSCCP training and reaccreditation programmes. As chair of the IT subcommittee of the International Federation of colposcopy and cancer prevention (IFCPC), she led a team which delivered a new website IFCPC.org.as well as the development of online content for the IFCPC/IARC comprehensive colposcopy course to improve access to colposcopy training internationally. Currently this includes English, Spanish and French Russian Japanese and Chinese versions.

Kim Hanly

Kim Hanly is a Dublin-based patient advocate and cervical cancer survivor, diagnosed at 26. Following radical surgery, she now lives with complex long-term complications. Kim is a Laura Brennan Award recipient for outstanding patient advocacy, runs a cervical cancer support group, and is a member of both the Cervical Cancer Elimination Committee and ISGOPPI.Through her advocacy, Kim works to increase cervical screening uptake, promote HPV vaccination, and raise awareness of the realities of life after cervical cancer treatment. She is passionate about ensuring that survivors, as well as women navigating cervical abnormalities and colposcopy services, are heard, supported, and treated with dignity at every stage of their journey.

Dr Deirdre Hayes-Ryan is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital. She is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Royal College of Obstetricians and has a PhD in Medicine from University College Cork. She is accredited with the British Society of Colposcopy Care providers (BSCCP) since 2013 and involved in colposcopy provision in CUMH. Karin Hellner

Professor Hellner is Associate Professor in Women’s Health at the University of Oxford and an Honorary Consultant Gynaecologist at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, where she leads the Colposcopy Service. Professor Hellner served for nine years on the executive board of the BSCCP, representing the South-East of England. Professor Hellner’s clinical and research interests focus on HPV-associated cervical disease. Professor Hellner leads the translational HPV Research Group at the University of Oxford, where their work centres on immune system interrogation and the development of therapeutic vaccines for cervical dysplasia. As Chief Investigator of the APOLLO trial, Professor Hellner led the first-in-human clinical trial of the Oxford-developed therapeutic HPV vaccine VTP-200, taking the programme from trial design through to successful completion.

Professor Mara Kyrgiou is a Professor at Imperial College London and a Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeon at Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust. The primary focus of her research is translational research in gynaecological cancers, in particular cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer with an emphasis on prevention, early detection and personalised treatment. She runs a programme of research investigating genetic, epigenetic, microbiome and host interaction in the aetiology of gynaecological cancers. She has an interest in cervical screening and is the Chief Investigator of the NOVEL trial on the HPV vaccination in women with cervical disease. She runs a research group investigating the impact of obesity and metabolic disorders in the development of gynaecological cancers. Professor Kyrgiou contributes to a number of national and international committees, such as the ESGO Prevention Committee and chairs the BSCCP Research Committee.
Paula Loughlin

Ms Paula Loughlin is a UCD graduate who completed her training in the UK and Northern Ireland, and obtained her FRCSI in General Surgery in 2013. Before returning to the Republic of Ireland in 2019, she worked as consultant in Northern Ireland for 6 years, and also completed a post CCT fellowship, in the colorectal unit, in the University Hospital of Bordeaux in France. Paula was appointed to her current post as consultant general & colorectal surgeon to Connolly & Beaumont Hospitals in 2022. She has recently established a high resolution anoscopy service in Beaumont Hospital for patients with anal dysplasia/AIN. Paula is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate education and is an Honorary clinical lecturer in RCSI. She was presented with an award for excellence in clinical teaching, in 2024.

Dr Lynch is a Consultant Microbiologist in The Coombe Hospital and the Lead Virologist at the Coombe National Cervical Screening Laboratory (NCSL). She completed a BSc(Hons) in Forensic and Environmental Analysis in DIT in 2007 and graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from UL in 2011. She completed the FRCPath and Higher Specialist Training in Clinical Microbiology in Ireland, with a Fellowship in Management in PwC in 2022, and then an Aspire Fellowship in HPV and Cervical Cancer in 2023.Her current interests are in the screening, diagnosis, management, and surveillance of HPV-related disease.

Aoife is an Obstetrics & Gynaecology specialist registrar working as a Fellow with CervicalCheck and the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit network. Her work with CervicalCheck focuses primarily on HPV self-sampling implementation into the national screening programme – she commenced an MD in HPV self-sampling in January 2026. Aoife’s fellowship began as an Out of Clinical Programme Experience (OCPE) year in her RCPI Higher Specialty Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology but has evolved into a two-year fellowship with the addition of the MD.

Nicholas Myerson

He did his first colposcopy in 1995 whilst a trainee in Sout Wales. In 2012 he was appointed Cahir of the BSCCP certification and Training Committee and has been involved with the Society in various roles ever since, currently as President-elect.
Jennifer O’Neill

Jennifer O’Neill is a registered advanced nurse practitioner working in Colposcopy and ambulatory gynaecology at the Rotunda Hospital. She has over 14 years’ experience in colposcopy and is an accredited colposcopist and trainer with the BSCCP. She was instrumental in the development of nurse led colposcopy and ambulatory gynaecology services within the Rotunda Hospital and independently runs a number of clinics including complex colposcopy and cervical gynaecology clinics. Jennifer completed a Masters in advanced practice at University College Dublin in 2023. Her practice encompasses autonomous clinical decision making, prescribing, education, service development and patient centred care.
Philippa Pearmain

Philippa Pearmain is a consultant in public health and senior clinical lead for the Cervical Screening Programme in England. She has worked in screening quality assurance for almost 28 years, initially setting up cervical screening quality assurance across the West Midlands and then over time developing it further across England. Over this time, she has worked with colleagues across the UK and internationally including being invited to undertake quality assurance visits to Poland in collaboration with the international Agency for Research and Cancer and Latvia with the European Federation of Colposcopy.
Hezkiel Petros

With over 15 years of experience in cervical cancer prevention and control in Ethiopia, Dr Hezkiel Petros is a leading expert in women’s health. Dr Petros currently serves as a Technical Advisor to ICAP-E and Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia, supporting national programmes to strengthen cervical cancer services. Dr Petros has been a member of the Ministry of Health’s Cervical Cancer Technical Working Group for over 11 years, contributing to the development of key national guidelines and training materials that have shaped prevention and treatment strategies across the country. Dr Petros’s academic qualifications include a Doctor of Medicine from Addis Ababa University College of Medical Sciences, a specialty certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a Master of Public Health from Addis Continental Institute of Public Health. Dr Petros has an extensive research portfolio, with publications focusing on cervical cancer screening, treatment, and patient outcomes, and are actively involved in ongoing studies aimed at improving early detection and care.

Dr. Sine Phelan is a Consultant Histopathologist in Galway University Hospital, with a special interest in Gynaecological pathology and is the lead pathologist for the Gynaecological pathology and Cervical screening pathology in GUH. In 2024, she took up the role of Laboratory Advisor for Cervicalcheck, the Irish National cervical Screening programme. Dr. Phelan also has a special interest in Quality Improvement and is a former Chair of the Irish National Histopathology QI Programme (RCPI) and a former member and vice-Dean of the faculty of Pathology, RCPI.

Noirin Russell

Professor Nóirín Russell MD FRCPI is a medical graduate of University College Cork. She works as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital and Honorary Clinical Professor at University College Cork. Since 2020, she has worked as Clinical Director of CervicalCheck, the Irish national cervical screening programme. She collaborated with the International Agency for Research and Cancer (IARC-WHO) to produce the 2022 Best Practice Guidelines on cervical cancer screening. She is currently a member of the working group of the European Commission Initiative on cervical cancer (ECcVC), working on the development of European clinical practice guidelines with an associated European quality assurance (QA) scheme. Professor Russell’s clinical and research interests include clinical leadership, cervical cancer screening, risk assessment in pregnancy, patient safety, quality assurance and staff engagement. She is interested in patient-focussed communication and society-wide discussion of harm in healthcare.
Sue Sherman

My main research focus is on understanding the psychosocial barriers and facilitators to HPV vaccination and cervical screening uptake. I work closely with patient and charity stakeholders to deliver research with demonstrable impact on policy and practice. Much of my research has a health equity focus and I am interested in the public, patient, and healthcare provider perspectives. I currently lead an NIHR funded research project “Cervical screening for women with physical disabilities: barriers and solutions”.
Lynn Swinburne

For over 20 years I have worked in health promotion. I have been a youth health project officer, a health promotion manager in an NGO and senior health promotion officer working in a national post in the HSE and now equity manager in NSS. I am passionate about social justice, equity in health and translating research into practice. I like to work through a community development and human rights approach and involve the community in all aspects of my work. I like to work on community mobilisation and community partnerships for health improvement. My current focus is on advancing equity in population-based screening, working to address the barriers that contribute to health disparities. My work emphasises inclusive approaches that aim to prioritise the voices and experiences of underserved populations, aiming to create lasting, equitable change in health outcomes.
Corrina Wright

M.B., B.Ch, B.A.O., FRCPath, MBA, CMgr, FRCPIDr Corrina Wright is Clinical Director of the National Cervical Screening Laboratory, (NCSL) at The Coombe Hospital in Ireland and a Consultant Cytopathologist. She is a clinical leader with over fifteen years of NHS consultant experience in improving pathways and outcomes in pathology services and screening programmes. She is a Professional Clinical Advisor for cervical screening to the national Screening Quality Assurance Service, (SQAS), for NHS England.She has been the Clinical Director for North West London Pathology, (NWLP), one of the largest NHS pathology providers in the UK. With her clinical leadership, she helped establish and transform centralised pathology services for a population of over 2 million. She holds senior roles including membership of the CervicalCheck Clinical Advisory Group, (CAG) for the National Screening Service, Ireland, the Royal College of Pathologists, Certificate in Higher Cervical Cytopathology Training, (CHCCT) examinations committee and NHS England Research and Innovation Development Advisory Committee, (RIDAC).
